Why User Experience is so Important and 19 Tips to Improve Yours

Last Updated on January 22, 2026 by Paula

Why is user experience so important to your coaching website’s design? Well, take a look at this statistic…

88% of online consumers are less likely to return to a site after a bad experience.

2021 Small Business Website Statistics You Need to Know

Yikes! That is a lot of potential clients to lose simply because you didn’t make user experience a priority when building your website.

So what we can we do to make sure our users have a good experience on our website? Well, let’s dive into that! But first, let’s look at what user experience is.

What is User Experience

User experience, or UX, is all about creating a website that people enjoy using! You’re creating a welcoming space for your potential clients where they can easily find what they’re looking for, interact with your content, and feel good while they do it.

Think of it like throwing a party for your website visitors! You want to make sure everything is just right: the music is awesome, the snacks are tasty, and the atmosphere is comfortable and enjoyable.

When you focus on creating a positive user experience on your website, you’re making it easy for people to engage with your brand, find the information they need about working with you, and feel excited about doing business with you.

UX is all about creating a seamless and enjoyable journey for your potential clients, from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave your website.

Now that you know what UX is, let’s look at some things you can do to create a fantastic user experience.

Keep Your Website Secure

Security is an important part of the user experience. You want your visitors to be safe and feel safe while they binge on your content. The following 7 tips will give you peace of mind that you’re doing your best to keep your site and potential clients secure.

Keep your Plugins up to date.

Plugins are often updated to fix security vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and improve features and functionality. So it’s important to update them regularly.

Use a strong password and 2-factor authentication.

It’s good practice to use a mix of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Also, turning on 2-factor authentication will give your more protection from attackers.

Choose a unique username.

Avoid using “admin” as your username. This is the first one attackers will try. Pick something that will be easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.

Have a SSL Certificate on your site.

This will create a secure connection between your visitor’s browser and your host’s server protecting any information your visitors submit

Limit login attempts.

This makes it more difficult for hackers to use automated tools to guess your login information. It also helps prevent brute force attacks.

Regularly back up your website

Use a plugin like Updraft to create regular backups for your website. Be sure to save to your own storage for example Dropbox or Google Drive rather than on your WordPress Dashboard. If something happens to your website and you can’t access it and that is where you’re backup is, well you won’t be able to access that either!

Install a plugin like WordFence.

Wordfence is a firewall and security scanner that will help protect your WordPress website from attackers. And the best thing about it? It’s free! Yes, they do have a premium option but for most of us the free option is enough.

Make Sure that Everyone Feels Welcome

Accessibility is about ensuring that your website and its content are accessible to as many people as possible, including your visitors with disabilities like hearing or vision impairments or mobility impairments.

Why is it so important? Well for one it is the right thing to do for your visitors, but also it’s the law.

By making sure that your website can be used by everyone, you can reach a wider audience, as well as ensure compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

There is a lot that goes into accessibility and since I have this terrific post from guest expert Emily Davison about accessibility which you can also check out, I’ll only go over a few tips here.

1. Make sure each button, category, or action step is easy to find and understand. The more straightforward your website navigation, the easier it will be for each and every visitor to access your site’s pages.

2. If you have a form for visitors to fill out, make sure each element of your form is labeled. This will ensure your visitors know what information is supposed to go into the form.

3. If you have links for visitors to click on, make sure they are obvious. Text links need to stand out from the rest of the content. Consider bold, underlined or colored formatting to set them apart.

4, Large graphics and files slow a user’s ability to upload your website. Make sure your website images, files and graphics are all as small as they can be. Quick upload times are appreciated by all.

5. Add an alt tag to all your images. An alt tag tells your visitors what the image is if it cannot be displayed or viewed.

6. Improve the readability of your content by using headings, bullet points, and short paragraphs to break up text and make it easier to scan.

6 More Ways to Improve the User Experience on Your Website

Make navigation easy and intuitive

Users expect to see your navigation in two places – right at the top of your website and again in the footer of your website. So be sure to include your navigation in these places and make it clearly visible.

Also, try to keep your main navigation in the header to 5 to 7 links. This will avoid overwhelming your user with too many choices right when they land on your website. Include the most important pages to your visitor’s journey and put the remaining links in your footer.

If you have a lot of pages, consider a drop-down menu or a mega menu which will allow you to have more links but still keep the navigation simple with only the main links listed first.

Pro tip: Don’t include links to your social media accounts in your header. You don’t want people landing on your website and then immediately leaving to go to Instagram or Facebook where they can be easily distracted.

Instead include these in your footer. Also, make sure that they open in a new window or tab so that the user stays on your website too.

Include Helpful Images and Videos

When creating your content think of different ways you can deliver that content to make it more user-friendly. Would a tutorial video be helpful? Or maybe an infographic? If you have a video or audio on your blog, include a transcript for those that prefer to consume content by reading.

Make use of white space

Don’t overcrowd your website. Make sure that your text and visuals have room to breathe by creating white space around them! You can do this by setting margins or adding padding around the different elements on your site.

Test and optimize

Whenever you add something new to your website whether it’s a new landing page with an opt-in form or booking calendar or a checkout always test it. And as you’re testing it out, consider ways you can improve the process for your user.

Add A Search Bar

Be sure to include a search bar for visitors to quickly find what they’re looking for. As a user, it’s very frustrating to need to search for something on a website and there is no search bar anywhere. Good places to include a search bar are: your blog’s sidebar, your website’s footer, and any archive pages.

Include contact info

How easy is it for your potential clients to contact you with questions or concerns? You want this process to be super easy. So be sure that you include your contact information on your website this can be via a contact page or even in your website’s footer if you don’t have a contact page.

Whew! That is a lot! But user experience is so important and if you follow these tips you will greatly improve the UX of your website and make your visitors and potential clients happy. Which means that they will be more likely to return to your website in the future.
