You probably think because I’m a web designer I’m going to say that the one thing every new business owner should invest in is a website, right?
Well, it’s not!
I do think a website is an important investment for coaches and service providers, but when you’re just starting out, it may not be an absolute must have for your business.
There are lots of thing your business will need, like an autoresponder, invoicing/payment system, booking calendar, client management system, and video conferencing app. Fortunately most of these types of apps offer a free tier that will be good enough to get you started. I have a blog post that lists some great free apps here.

So what is the ONE thing every new business owner should invest in?
A good contract!
It’s important that you protect yourself and your clients and a good contract will do just that. It also shows that you’re a professional and gives you and your clients peace of mind which makes it worth the investment.
Best practice of course is to have a lawyer draw one up for you, but that isn’t always in the budget when you’re just starting out or even if you’ve been in business a while like me.
This past year, I knew it was time to update my contract. The one I was using was form 2017! A lot has changed in business since then. We now have things like GDPR, cookie policies, accessibility and AI to consider in our contracts. And while I had made updates to my old contract regarding these things, it all felt very cobbled together.
I began following Amber Gilormo, The Boutique Lawyer*, on Instagram some time in 2025. Amber is a lawyer and has created easy-to-use, affordable legal templates that are perfect for small businesses. I really like what she had to say on social media, so I signed up for her email list too. Because I had been following her for a long time I was confident she knew what she was doing and that she was legitimate, so when I was ready to purchase a new contract, I bought from her.
And I was very pleased! The contract was thorough and came with easy to follow instructions on customizing it for my business. It was simple and not time-consuming! I loved it!
