What website policies do you need to protect your Faith-based biz?

Last Updated on November 27, 2023 by Paula

One of the questions I receive the most from the coaches and service providers I work with is “What legal pages are necessary for my website?” And I thought this would be a great question to tackle here on the blog!

Including policies on your website shows that you are a legitimate business and makes your visitors feel more comfortable on your website and in doing business with you. Policies are essential for establishing trust and transparency with your community. And they also show your commitment to protecting yourself and your visitors.

Before we go any further a disclaimer, I’m not a lawyer so what I’m offering is not legal advice, and I can’t tell you what all policies you need for your business.

As a business owner, it is part of your responsibility to do your due diligence to research and decide what kind of policies you need to have on your website. As you will see in the list below some policies are specific to the type of business you run and not every business will need every policy listed.

Below, I list some policies for you to consider for your business and after that some resources to help you find templates to get started.

Some policies you will/may need for your business:

  1. Privacy Policy: A Privacy Policy outlines how your website collects, uses, and safeguards personal information provided by visitors or customers. It ensures transparency and compliance with data protection regulations.
  2. Cookie Policy: This policy explains how your website uses cookies, which are small data files stored on your website visitors’ devices. It informs them about the purpose of these cookies and their options for managing or disabling them.
  3. Terms and Conditions or Terms of Use: These policies will define the rules and agreements between your website and its visitors. They cover matters like user behavior, content usage, and dispute resolution.
  4. Refund Policies: This policy outlines the conditions and process for refunds on products or services that you offer. It helps your customers and clients understand their rights regarding returns and refunds.
  5. Disclosures (such as an Affiliate Disclosure): Disclosures inform visitors about any potential conflicts of interest, sponsorships, or affiliations that may influence the content or recommendations on your website. An Affiliate Disclosure specifically covers any affiliate marketing relationships.
  6. Disclaimers: Disclaimers set clear boundaries on the information and advice provided on your website. They clarify that the content is for informational purposes only and not a substitute for professional advice.
  7. Accessibility Statement: This statement confirms your commitment to making your website accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. It may outline the steps taken to ensure accessibility and invite feedback from users.
  8. Shipping and Delivery Policy: If you sell physical products, a policy covering shipping, delivery times, and related information may be necessary.
  9. Membership or Subscription Terms: If your website offers membership or subscription-based services, create a policy that details the terms and billing practices.
  10. Comment Policy: If your website allows users to leave comments, a comment policy can specify the guidelines for acceptable behavior, moderation, and how you handle user-generated content.

The best practice is to go to a lawyer and have them draw up your policies for you, but maybe that’s not in your budget right now. And that’s OK.

There are lots of policy template websites out there where you can get the policies that you need for your website. Check out some great resources below to help you get started.
