“You work from home; you must get so much done!”
This is the phrase I’ve continuously heard since I decided to run a business from home.
The reality is that just because you work from home doesn’t mean you’re automatically more productive than someone commuting to a regular 9–5. Working from home can be amazing — but staying focused when your office is a few steps away from your bed isn’t always easy.
The good news? You can thrive and reach incredible goals while working from home — and these productivity tips will help you do just that.
1.Get an Early Start on Your Day
Just because you could roll out of bed and get to work each morning in less than five minutes doesn’t mean you should!
Most of us aren’t equipped to hit the ground running first thing in the morning. You might need time to sip your coffee, wake up slowly, and prepare for the day before diving into work. Getting an early start ensures you don’t spend your evenings working, and it gives you time to mentally and physically prepare before the workday begins.
2. Create Office Hours (and Stick to Them)
Office hours aren’t just for you — they’re for your family and friends, too. It’s easy to treat working from home as “flexible,” but that flexibility can quickly lead to frustration and long workdays.
Setting office hours helps everyone in your household know when you’re available (and when you’re not). You don’t have to stick to a strict 9–5, but creating clear work blocks ensures you have dedicated, distraction-free time to get things done.
3. Create a Dedicated Workspace That Helps You Focus
There are two rules to creating a productive workspace:
- Keep it outside of your bedroom (separate work and rest).
- Choose a spot that’s away from the main traffic areas of your home.
If you work from a laptop, you can still switch up your space when you need a change of scenery. Sometimes, moving to a different corner of the house or working from your patio can give your brain a boost and help you stay focused.
4. Take Breaks and Schedule Them Into Your Day
When you work from home, it’s easy to stay glued to your desk. Between emails, calls, and projects, you might realize you haven’t stood up in hours.
Taking breaks throughout the day helps your brain rest and recharge. Try scheduling short breaks in your calendar — and take them seriously! Step away from your screen, grab a snack, or go for a short walk. You’ll come back to work feeling refreshed and ready to focus.
5. Work When You’re Most Productive
If you have a flexible schedule, use it to your advantage. Pay attention to when you naturally feel most focused and creative — that’s when you should tackle your most important tasks.
Not everyone’s most productive hours are the same. Some people do their best work in the early morning, while others find their flow late at night. Save your high-energy hours for your hardest or most important work, and use your lower-energy times for things like checking emails or organizing your workspace.
6. Dress for the Day
It’s easy to fall into the “pajamas all day” habit when you work from home. But there’s a reason so many people say, “Dress for success.”
Getting dressed (even casually) sets the tone for your day and helps you mentally shift into “work mode.” Plus, you never know when you’ll need to hop on a quick video call or run an errand — and it’s always nice to feel put together.
7. Plan Out Your Workday
If you ever find yourself sitting at your desk unsure where to start, planning your day can make a huge difference.
Write down your top priorities for the day before you begin working. Ask yourself:
- What needs to be done first?
- What’s due soonest?
- What will make the biggest impact today?
Having a plan helps you stay focused and gives you a little boost of motivation each time you check something off your list.
8. Use Productivity Tools and Time Trackers
Working from home can blur the lines between work and personal time. That’s where productivity tools come in handy.
Use apps like ClickUp, Trello, or Asana to manage projects and deadlines. Time-tracking tools like Toggl or Clockify can also help you see where your time goes each day — which can be surprisingly eye-opening! Understanding how you spend your time helps you make smarter choices about where to focus your energy.
9. Set Boundaries with Notifications and Technology
Between emails, social media, and chat apps, it’s easy to lose focus when notifications are constantly popping up.
Try turning off unnecessary notifications during deep work sessions or using “Do Not Disturb” mode during certain hours. You’ll be amazed at how much more you accomplish when you’re not being interrupted every few minutes.
10. Prioritize Mental Breaks and Movement
Sitting for hours at a time can drain your energy and creativity. Make movement a part of your daily routine — even five minutes can make a difference.
Take a short walk, stretch, or step outside for fresh air between tasks. Taking care of your mental and physical health will help you stay sharp and productive throughout the day.
Working from home gives you incredible freedom and flexibility — but it also takes discipline and structure to stay productive. By building healthy routines, setting boundaries, and giving yourself space to rest, you’ll create a workday that feels balanced and sustainable.
Whether you’re a long-time remote worker or new to working from home, these productivity tips will help you get more done (without burning out).
