5 Things To Consider When Choosing A Web Designer

Last Updated on January 22, 2026 by Paula

You know you need a website for your faith-based business and you need someone to design that website…. but how do you determine if a web designer is a good fit for you and your business?

Here is a list of questions to ask yourself when choosing your perfect web designer.

What platforms do they work with?

You can build a high-converting strategic website on ANY platform. This is kind of a controversial statement as you will hear so many people say that you have to be on a specific platform (as in whatever platform they’re using) to have a successful website. But I truly believe that you can successful on any platform. I see designers out there killing it on Wix, Show It, Shopify, Kajabi, or Squarespace – they built websites for their clients that convert on all of these platforms.

You need to decide which platform works best for you and your business and then find a designer specializing in that platform. I build on WordPress because it works for my brain and my business. I love that WordPress is open source and that with the right plugins, I can build any kind of website my clients want. If they want a shop we can do it. If they want a course platform we can do it! The options are endless!

But I get that WordPress isn’t for everyone. There is a learning curve and some plugins can be expensive. However, if it is for you, check out my design services!

Is accessibility something they consider in their designs?

One of the most important things a web designer should do when building your website is to keep the user experience in mind and part of user experience is making sure the website is accessible to everyone.

Accessibility isn’t just a buzzword. And it isn’t something that you can just ignore.

So, when choosing a web designer, make sure they prioritize accessibility in their designs. This includes things like proper use of alt text for images, color contrast for readability, keyboard navigation, and overall user-friendly design.

Ensuring your website is accessible not only demonstrates your commitment to inclusivity but also ensures that all visitors can easily engage with your content.

Do they offer copy-writing services? Or do they have a process to help you write your copy?

Does your web designer offer copywriting services, or at least have a process to help you nail down your messaging?

I saw many clients struggle with writing the content for their websites. That was why I created the Write Your Client-Getting Website workbook to guide clients through what they need for each page of their website.

Every client who works with me on a website design gets a copy as well as my wireframes to help them envision where the content they are writing will go. My clients find these guides so helpful as it takes the guesswork out of writing their content.

Do they provide you with the tools you need to maintain your website after the website handover?

Once your website is built now what?

Many designers including myself will provide their clients with how-to videos on how to maintain or update their websites after launch.

I do this because I want to empower my clients. I never want them to feel nervous or unsure about editing their own websites. Your website is part of your business and you should feel comfortable making changes to it.

I have some clients who want no part of making even simple changes like a text edit and that is ok! But the majority of my clients love being able to go in and update the copy or change out an image if they want to.

I also offer ongoing maintenance packages for clients who need extra support and aren’t interested in maintaining their websites by themselves.

So when you’re considering a web designer, ask what happens after the build and if they will provide you with tools to help you maintain your site.

Are they familiar with your niche?

While I wouldn’t consider being unfamiliar with your niche a deal breaker, knowing that your web designer has worked with others in your industry can be helpful. The designer will already be familiar with how your type of business runs and know exactly what you need for your website.

Some extra things to look for in your Web Designer

Here are a few more things to consider when choosing your web designer.

  • Their portfolio – this will give you a good idea of their style and skills so you’ll have a better idea if they can meet your needs.
  • Do they have case studies? – case studies go more in-depth on the process a web designer uses to create your website and will include their client’s feedback. These can help determine if a designer’s process will work for you.

As you start your journey to find your perfect web designer, keep these key questions in mind. By choosing a designer who works with your preferred platform, prioritizes accessibility, offers copywriting support, and empowers you to manage your website independently, you’ll be well on your way to a online presence that truly reflects who you are and what you stand for.
