Don’t Fall For These 8 Common Myths about WordPress

Last Updated on May 24, 2023 by Paula

WordPress is one of the most popular website builders on the market, but there are a surprising amount of myths and misinformation out there that can end up leading some users to choose the wrong platform for their business. WordPress websites power about 30% of the internet, and there are many misconceptions about it since it started back in 2005. If you are still on the fence about building your website on WordPress, here are some of the most common myths about WordPress and why they’re not correct. As you’ll see, many of the “issues” with WordPress just aren’t true.

WordPress is just for bloggers

One of the most common myths is that WordPress is just a website builder for blogs and bloggers. While many bloggers choose to use WordPress for their blogs, it’s not the only way that this website builder can be used. WordPress is capable of building nearly any kind of website that you can imagine. Out of the 30% of websites powered by WordPress, you might be surprised to find that most of them are not blogs. Many are corporate websites, online stores, online magazines, and even Fortune 500 companies and universities.

WordPress is not secure

There is a rumor going around that WordPress can easily be hacked. While it is the most frequently hacked one, it is not the easiest to hack. WordPress is used more than any other content management system out there, so the probability of a security threat will be higher than other platforms simply because there are more users.

WordPress is only for small websites

Back when WordPress was created, it was host to mostly simple personal bloggers. Being such an easy website builder for new users means that many first-time users keep things small and simple. However, WordPress can be home to many large websites and can even provide the foundation for many large websites. There are many plugins available to help with high-demand complex websites and high-traffic websites, as well as WordPress’s highly customizable website builder.

WordPress doesn’t have any support

Are you having problems with your WordPress site? No problem! WordPress has a customer support team that can help you get sorted out whether your site is down or have a simple question. WordPress has a community of designers, bloggers, and even support reps who have built the WordPress Codex. They have an active support forum for users to problem solve and even have a maintenance service provider ready to help.

WordPress isn’t good for eCommerce

WordPress can be an excellent place to set up your online shop if you have a product, digital product, or services that you offer online. WooCommerce powers 41% of all eCommerce stores on the internet and is a great way to set up a shop without having a lot of back-end knowledge yourself. WordPress also has Shopify integration that makes it easy to add eCommerce to your website. There are many other options if neither of these options works for you, and you can always chat with a support rep if you’re not sure which option is best for you.

WordPress sites all look the same

If you are familiar with WordPress, then at first glance, you might think that all the sites look the same. While WordPress has a few great default themes provided to their customers, there are more than a thousand free themes alone, not to mention premium themes with many customizable options. You can design a professional-looking website (or hire me to do it for you!) without knowing any coding, and this means your website will unlikely look precisely like another WordPress website.

The future of WordPress is unknown

WordPress is free and open-source software. This means that a single person does not develop it but a community of developers. It has a trademark owned by a non-profit, WordPress Foundation, which protects the name and promotes the open-source software. However, WordPress is far from a small company that can disappear without a trace. WordPress is unlikely to go anywhere any time soon; in fact, it will probably grow.

WordPress is poor quality

WordPress is free software. However, hosting and other aspects of websites require a fee. Some skeptical people believe that developers won’t waste their time on free software because they won’t be financially rewarded. However, thousands of developers have worked on their code, and the fact that it is free and has such a strong community is why it is so developer-friendly and successful.

As you can see, several myths are surrounding WordPress. After this website builder took off, it only makes sense that other competitors would help push these myths into the mainstream. However, as you can see, there are many myths here that aren’t true. In fact, WordPress is one of the best website builders on the market currently, and can be used for just about any website.
