Web design trends are continually changing, and this year is no exception. As new programs and techniques continue to be developed, so does the standard for web design and what’s popular for websites. If you are a designer, or merely seeking to update your website in 2020, here are the top web design trends for 2020 that you need to know about.
Layered Elements
Layering effects are going to be a big trend in 2020. This involves changes in color placement and creating a layering effect using background elements to connect the spaces on your webpage. The goal with these layered elements is to create an almost 3D effect with your design by adding layers to your graphics.
Video Backgrounds
As YouTube and Tic Tock take over the video space, having more media options on your webpage is going to be advantageous. One way to incorporate video into your web design is to add it to your background. This eye-catching design choice will cause your readers to stop on the webpage if only briefly to see the video and take in this new type of content. You want to make sure your video doesn’t require sound to make a significant impact on your page, as most users will have their sound off for these types of webpages.

Big Typography
Odd spacing, sizing, or line breaks and thinking outside the box are huge trends in the design space right now. When done right, this can turn even the most informational page into a work of art. Big typography is one of the ways you can achieve this without taking too many huge leaps into the design elements of your page. As more of our media is consumed on mobile devices rather than desktop computers, larger typography is needed to get information with a quick scroll.
Minimalism
Have you ever noticed that the more high-end something looks, the less cluttered it seems? As minimalism and the minimalist approach take over our lives, they have also been introduced into the web design space as well. Web design is going back to a more simple minimalist design that focuses on the use of white space and limited color palettes to give your webpage plenty of room to breathe. While adding a bunch of text and design elements to your page can help make your page look more interesting, the reality is that most of this is lost when you switch your page to mobile. Instead, it seems cluttered and pushed together to fit on the size of a mobile screen.
AI and Contextual Design
As artificial intelligence and voice assistants start to make their way into nearly every household and device, it’s essential to incorporate these into your web design. You want to use AI in a way that will make your page feel more human to have success using this type of advanced technology. There are a few ways you can do this, but I have two great examples I want to share with you.
First, tailor your website experience to the individual user who visits your site. This can be based on their location, their language, and even their operating system to provide them with a personalized experience just for them.
The second way you can do this is by incorporating AI into a chatbot on your website. This will deliver support and help your visitors around the clock and help them find the information they’re looking for better.
Chatbots and artificial intelligence are here for the foreseeable future, so it’s best to start embracing this way of thinking now.
Dark Mode Web Design
This type of web design not only looks chic and modern, but it’s also easy on the eyes as well. This will make your design elements pop, and they are better for OLED screens. Dark backgrounds have been known to improve the visibility of accent colors to create a truly unique design experience for the user. As the rate we consume technology increases, making these strides to keep people on your webpage longer can’t hurt.
3D Elements
3D visuals and graphics have always piqued the daily consumer, but they used to come with a considerable price tag. Now, you don’t necessarily need a NASA or years of schooling to teach you how to use and design in 3D. Realistic 3D is a way you can create a more immersive experience for your site that encourages the user to stay on your site longer. Until VR is more cost-effective and widely available, this is a way to add a more immersive experience to your webspace.
No matter what kind of website you run, these tips are going to help you update and design the perfect site for your audience in 2020. While the world of web design is continually changing, these design trends will probably stick around for most, if not the entire year.
